Becky's Country Store

There is a new store that has been opened in Glenburn, Maine that everyone has been talking about, they just opened and everyone has been going there. They don’t have a wide selection of food or drinks yet but hopefully they will get more as their business grows. They built a new deck on the side of the store, they plan to start selling ice cream out of it in the summer months. There menu is really good though, they have all kinds of sandwiches and pizzas. They have cookies and baked goods by the checkout that are also very good. I really like the fact that they are putting the deck on the side. I think it will bring them a lot of business in the summer.

First Track Meet

Tuesday the 28th of April is the first track meet for the Glenburn School track team.  The meet is right after school if you want to see it at the Brewer Track Field.  Track is a sport where there is a ton of events you can choose to compete in.  Track isn’t just a running sport because it also has throwing events you can participate in too.
My favorite event is the hurdles.  In case you don’t know what the hurdles are,  hurdles are an event where you run and jump over a bar until you reach the finish line. My second favorite event is the relay race where you run until you reach the next person on your team and pass a stick to the person.  Then you do this four times and then you sprint to the finish line.

Summer Vacation

There are only 35 more days of school! 2 of them are half days. For the 8th graders it is even less than that at only 29 days! Over vacation there all kinds of things to do but make sure you keep your brains healthy. A lot of times when school’s out people start to sleep more which is okay but students should try to get out of the house to stay active and get a nice tan. Some activities to be doing would be swimming, hiking, biking, playing sports like baseball, basketball, football, or soccer. Make sure to go enjoy the sunshine!

Orono- IIIII IIIII III

Reasons: Some of the reasons why the students from Glenburn chose to go to these schools are because of their great athletics and education. Some of the other students said they want to go to Bangor because of their ability to get kids into higher class colleges.

Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev is a famous actor for The Vampire Diaries.  She plays as Elena Gilbert on the show.  She’s been in the business of playing Elena for many years and has been in the show for 6 seasons.  Now she wants to exit the stage.

Fans are upset and some are actually in tears from the hearings of the disappearance of Nina Dobrev.  She announced on April 6th that she would be leaving Tvd for good during the 6th season.

Nina says, “I always knew that I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure and during those 6 years I got the journey of a lifetime.”  She also states, “I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be a human, and a human pretending to be a doppelganger.  I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still much to come before the season finale in May.”

The crew on The Vampire Diaries is just devastated but while during the last episodes of Tvd Candice Accola (Caroline), Kat Graham (Bonnie), Zach Roerig (Matt), Steven R. Mcqueen (Jeremy), and Michael Trevino (Tyler) will also be leaving to explore new opportunities in their life.  It seems like everyone is starting to leave Tvd for good and everything is just tearing apart.

As we all wait for the season finale in May and everything will finally come to an end for Nina Dobrev, I think we all wish Nina a happy trip to the ending of her 6 years of work as Elena Gilbert, on The Vampire Diaries.

Grade 2 Science Project

Every year the second grade make dioramas, along with a report about what their dioramas are about. When the kids are done with their projects and reports they put them on display in a classroom for other people to come and see. This project helped the children learn by reading their reports and explaining the dioramas they had on display. The projects are made of large shoe boxes. The students were expected to add materials to the dioramas to depict the animals environment, such as trees, rocks, ponds and other landscape-like materials.
Each student has to write a report about their animal. The report has to be handwritten and the student has to be able to read and answer any questions about the project. The report has to include a picture of the animal and is must tell where the animal lives, what it eats, how it gets its food, and what group it belongs to.

No Knockout?

Before or after lunch we would go into the gym to play knock out for fifteen minutes until it was our turn to eat.  The reason for playing knockout was so the cafeteria wasn’t so loud when we were eating lunch.  Now there is no knockout because people weren’t using the equipment the right way. I think that the people that didn’t use the equipment right shouldn’t be able to play knockout and the people that aren’t playing knockout to sit on the bleachers because they are getting in people’s ways.  The people that aren’t sitting down and are supposed to be sitting are shooting basketballs when they are supposed to be sitting.  Why aren’t they just doing what they're told?  Now they ruined knockout for everybody.  Also people playing knockout are shooting half courts and “damaging” the rims.  If they don’t want you to shoot half courts then don’t do it!  It shouldn’t be that hard to sit on bleachers.  They kept interfering with the games and sometimes kicked the balls away from the people that needed it.
I think that at least the sixth graders should have knockout because it was mostly the eighth graders in the gym that ruined for the school. Also that people should have listened to Mr.King about the fact that the time that we were in the gym was only for knockout not foolishness. The knockout in the gym was a privilege for us. Knockout was also so that students wouldn't have to eat in a crowded lunch room. I personally think that knock out should have been taken away because like I said it was a privilege and us students ruined it.

19 Inning Baseball Game

The red sox played a 19 inning baseball game for the first time in Red Sox history. The game went on for 6 hours and 49 minutes. That’s a long game! They threw 628 pitches and if the game went on any longer they would’ve run out of pitchers! The baseball game finally ended with the red sox ending it on a double play. This is certainly a game that will be remembered for a long time.

Spring Break

Finally Spring is here and April vacation is coming up. During winter break it’d be a good idea to take a vacation to a warmer location to escape the cold, but with warmer weather coming up it’s a more likely choice to stay here and enjoy the rare sunny weather.
Some good ideas on what to do during break could be
  • Activities outside
    • go to the park
    • ride a bike
    • walk your dog
  • Get a job
    • walk dogs
    • babysit
  • Stay inside on the internet (like most teenagers)
    • Netflix
    • Youtube
    • video games
    • social media
  • Stay at a friend’s house

No matter what you do, this is a great chance to relax and not worry about school for once. You should take advantage of it and have a good spring break.

Weather for April 14- 17

This week the weather is great! It is April 14th and all the snow is melting away. The wind is wonderful because it is helping all the water to dry up. The driveways are finally drying so kids can play basketball and are shoes aren’t getting covered in mud! The baseball fields are almost ready for use and the boys will be practicing outside today for the first time all year. By the end of the week the fields should be almost ready to play on!

Eastport Breakwater

On December 4 the East Port Breakwater collapsed into the harbor. No one was hurt, but a man and his dog where standing on the  dock when it started to crumble and collapsed under him. Luckily the man and his dog where able to get off the dock in time but the mans truck not so lucky.
It will take about 14.95 million dollars to reconstruct the almost 400 foot breakwater.
Beginning to build
The first thing they had to do before building was to clear the massive amount of snow. Chris Gardner said Friday, ”It will take about 18-24 months to complete the reconstructions.”

8th Grade Field Trip

On the 8th grade class field trip the whole 8th grade goes white water rafting in the Kennebec river. The Glenburn school is raising money to go on the trip by having fundraisers and marathons and other events. Every year the 8th grade goes on this huge field trip but if the school doesn’t raise 1,500 dollars, we are not able to go.
The first Wednesday and Thursday of June is when the field trip will be held. It will be held at that time because it will be too cold before then and we can’t go if the kids are not in school in the summer. When we go, everyone will have to wear wetsuits and paddles. We will be experiencing classes 1,2,3,4, and 5 of the Kennebec river.
On June third and fourth the hole 8th grade will get on a bus and travel to the camps that we will be staying in for one night. It will take approximately 2 hours to get there. On the June 2nd we will be going on white water rafting with a few tour guides and our teachers. That night when we are finished, we will be heading back to Glenburn School where the students parents will pick them up.

Book Review

I read the book Maximum Ride: Fang book 6. It was about a group of kids who have wings and can fly. All of them can develop abilities that helps them survive. Max the leader of the group can fly really fast, Fang the 2nd in command and become invisible, Iggy the blind kid of the group and see contrast of black and white feel colors and hear really good, Nudge the african American and move metal objects around, Gazzy can fart a giant green cloud of stinky gas like in a cartoon, and Angle can read minds influence and control people with her mind.
The were developed in a lab called The School. when they get to Africa they find another kid like them. Max Really doesn't like him because he’s new and untrustworthy. so when they hear Max is the only one who can save the world. read the book to see if they make it.

Spring

Spring is finally around the corner and we are finally seeing the snow disappear.  Thats right it is disappearing hopefully forever until winter.  Most families are excited for the snow leaving Glenburn but while others don’t like it.

Residents of Glenburn hate the snow on the ground and can’t wait for it to leave.  We have gotten snow storms still in Glenburn which isn’t right.  This is supposed to be Spring while we still get snow storms.  Looks like the snow doesn’t want to leave Glenburn.

Sooner or later the snow will melt once it gets warmer outside.  For people who dislike snow, it will be gone very soon.  It will leave us for good until October or maybe even later like December.  We just got to hold on.  We have to wait for the snow to leave Glenburn for good until next winter because I think or we all think everyone is glad that winter has finally left Glenburn.

Ice Cream Social

Mrs.Williams class is having a ice cream social. Lets hope that the ice cream tastes really good. The regular flavors are vanilla and chocolate and some times a twist. If the students get lucky they might get toppings for the ice cream. Mrs.Smith says that they got ice cream all over their arms all the way up to their elbows. Also that it was a sticky mess.

High School Choice

The eighth grade will soon be graduating and going to high school. Since we live in Glenburn, they have the choice to go to the high school they want. This means that now is the time they start deciding where they want to go. Before they decide, they’ll have to consider many things such as; where do they think they’ll feel most comfortable, get the best education, excel, and other things. This is a lot of work and pressure for some students but for others it’s an easy decision.
Having so many schools to choose from might be difficult because students could be torn between two, their friends might want to go to another school than them, and there might be different things that some schools have and some don’t. I think everyone should choose the school they go to by education and if it provides the opportunity to do what they want in high school. With technology, students have the ability to stay friends with their  current ones even if they go to different schools. If the school you want to go to doesn’t have one thing you want and everything else you do, you could get permission and start that sport, club, etc. With that said, students should start deciding and applying right away, if they haven’t yet.

Bangor Soccer

      By: Alyssa G
Bangor Rec. Soccer signups have ended and soccer will be starting on April 17th. An e-mail has been released letting people that signed up know when the practice will start. A week after the practice the first game will start on the following Sunday. The snow and ice have gotten in the way but, soon the weather will get warmer and we can get a start to the season. One of my favorite coaches is Jason Hill.
Jason is a very funny, outgoing, and fun loving person. Unfortunately, Jason’s sister has been diagnosed with Cancer. There was a benefit for her and in my opinion it was amazing. It was at an event center and it started at 12:00. There was a band playing with people dancing. In between breaks an auction took place and the prizes were great. Kenny Chesney V.I.P. tickets sold for $700.
On the sides of the wall there was a silent auction going on. On one table there was gift cards to virtually anywhere. On the second table there was handmade things like paintings and a hug gold colored map. on a table in the corner were things like toolboxes and a basic tool set. On another one were pots and hair products. During the auction someone bought something and gave it to Jason’s sister. Another person did that as well and was very sweet and generous to her.
On April 18th is the Bangor Soccer Appreciation Day sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Cameron Stadium-WS Cohen School in Bangor is where the practices and games will be held.Games will start on May 3rd and running and will end on June 14th, not including Memorial Day. The practices will be held between 11:00 am to 6:30 pm.

Student Council Dance

There is a dance this Friday April 10 and anybody in middle school can come. It is 6-9 PM and it is going to be held again right at the Glenburn school in the cafeteria. You don’t have to dress a certain way you can just come and have a good time. It is 3 dollars to get in and you can buy candy or a drink. All kids should participate in the snowball! Don’t be shy! I hope to see you there it should be a lot of fun.

Winter Sports

Winter sports are ending and spring sports are starting. This year the Glenburn Girls A basketball team did really well, they only lost 2 games one of which being the championship. They lost a rough game to Holbrook in the regular season and they lost to Wagner in the championships. The Boys A basketball team had a great year this year, we went undefeated (14-0) It was a great season. Jackson Kenny was our only sixth grader this year and he did a great job contributing to the team all year. We went on to win the semi finals against Caravel in OT and then the championship against Wagner, we ended up leaving the Hampden high school gym with big smiles and a trophy.
The Glenburn B teams also did very well this year, they may not have one the championship but a lot of the players on the teams improved. Its not always about winning, it's about getting better at what you do.
We wouldn’t have been able to pull the championship off without our amazing coach, Mr. Labree. It was his first year coaching us and he did an amazing job, all the kids loved him.

Glenburn Little League

Here at Glenburn Elementary School Little League is  here so wish your teammates good luck. Lets hope that the team this year will be really good. It might be hard to get to town baseball if you also play for the middle school team also. Positions must be hard to choose for the coaches with so many good players. Glenburn Little League is going to be a great team this year.

Spring Sports

It is now time to start up the new season. Our school has many sports that you may play, whether it’s baseball, softball, or even track.
There are sign up sheets right outside Mr. Marquis’ door and I recommend you sign up. Baseball is a great sport with a very good coach Mr. Lizzote and you will definitely learn a lot. There is a new softball coach Mr. Labree and he is a very talented man who will transform you into a better softball player and should be a lot of fun. In track there are all kinds of things that you can do, some examples are long jump, 100 meter race, discus, and you might even wanna try shotput. At each practice you will run 8 laps around the school parking lot which will get you in good shape. The woman in charge is Mrs. Fournier who is also a great 6th grade teacher at our school. All these sports are great and will get you fit. So make sure you hit the fields this spring!

The tryouts are April 1st and 2nd right after school. Track will be in the cafeteria and then heading outside if the weather is nice. Baseball will be practicing at 2:45 to 3:45, and softball will be 3:45 to 4:45 in the gym. Make sure to bring everything you need including a glove and a change of clothes. For track make sure to bring some running shoes, clothes to workout in, and water to stay hydrated.

Who’s on the team? You will find out if you are on the team this Friday, April 3rd and you will also get a schedule of when the practices are. There are no cuts for track so everybody has made the team that signed up. The first practice will be on Monday, April 6th and you will get to meet the team!

It’s almost time to hit the fields if the weather cooperates and all the snow melts and dries nicely. So hopefully I will see you guys out on the field or track this season.

Testing

 Glenburn School’s New Testing Program

Smarter Balanced testing is a new kind of testing to the Glenburn School.  The testing is for grades 3-8 and is a lot different from the testing we had last year.  The testing last year was all multiple choice but this year for math tests you have to show your workout and type your answer.  In ELA there is some multiple choice questions and, there is some that you have to highlight a sentence.
My opinion is we should have stuck with the other testing because the test is kind of pressuring. The other testing was a lot faster to do and it gave you your score at the end.
